What is Evaporative Cooling?Step out of the water after swimming and feel
the chill as a breeze hits your body. That is nature's air conditioning
through evaporative cooling. The water evaporating from your skin
creates the cooling. After the water has evaporated, your body
heats up again under a hot sun. Take another dip in the water
and start the cooling process all over again.
People understood the value of Evaporative Cooling centuries ago. One thing they would do was wet burlap or other material and hang it in windows and openings. When the air blew through the material it caused the water to evaporate therefore creating a cooling effect. When the material dried or if there was no wind, the cooling ceased.
Today manufacturers typically produce Evaporative Coolers by having a fan or blower pull or push air through a wetted pad(s). The fan draws/pushes the air through the wetted pads blowing the resultant cooled air into the area to be cooled. As the evaporation takes place the excess water is recirculated and eventually evaporates. You never recirculate the cooled air back into an evaporative cooler or you will end up with a swamp like condition, therefore the trade name Swampy. You must provide fresh hot air as that is what an evaporative cooler likes best and allows them to perform at their best.
The amount of cooling one can expect is based on several factors. Humidity and Dew Point are the two main factors. Evaporation occurs slower in humid air. Ambient air could be cooled 15 to 25 Fahrenheit degrees by evaporation in dry air, however may only cool 5 to 10 Fahrenheit degrees with the Humidity over 65%. See Humidity Index
On a hot dry day (95F) (35C) with humidity at 30% the coolers output temperature would be (76F) (24C). With the temperature the same however the humidity at 55% the output temperature would be (86F) (30C). The heat inside a vehicle is always several degrees hotter than the outside temperature, as we all know.
If the humidity is at 75%, the air will hold 25% more humidity before it is saturated. The evaporative cooler is considered a weak cooling device when the humidity is over 65%. However, by having the air blow directly on you, relief will still be obtained even when the air is close to saturation. The hotter the day becomes, typically the dryer it is, therefore the evaporative cooler will begin to operate more effectively.
For instance say the humidity is 100% in the early morning hours with a temperature of 70°F. As the day warms up to say 90°F at mid-day the humidity could be around 50%. At the time you most need the relief, the evaporative cooler will be there to help. Of course if a moisture laden weather system comes into the area, that could change things, just like a drying trend would change the numbers for the better.
There is a huge difference between the 110/220-volt coolers manufactured to cool a building and the 12-volt & 110-volt Portable Personal Evaporative Coolers. The difference is the physical size and air (cubic feet per minute) output. The 12 volt personal coolers need to be designed to draw less power and cool people, not areas. Your 12-volt source of power is limited. You need only think about the bank of batteries required to power an electric car to get an idea of the limitations of power available.
You do not need to expend all that 12-volt power when you use the portable, versatile, Swampy. Surround yourself will cool air like a space heater, that is why we call our evaporative coolers Swampy SpaceKoolrs. Nobody produces a 12-volt evaporative cooler with more cooling capacity than the Swampy SpaceKoolr .
